bet365 continues US expansion with Washington D.C. launch
Global gaming group bet365 has continued its expansion in the US regulated market after partnering with management company Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) to launch its online sportsbook in Washington, D.C.
Under the agreement, D.C. bettors will now have access to bet365’s extensive betting markets that cover more than 100 sports and also feature live betting and in-game options. Coinciding with the launch of its sportsbook, the operator has also announced a bonus bet open-account offer for new customers.
According to bet365 it has entered into a multi-year deal with MSE, making it a Proud Partner of the capital’s professional sports teams: the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and the Washington Mystics.
The partnership with MSE also enables bet365 to integrate into fan experiences across the broader Monumental Sports Network (MNMT) and team broadcasts. bet365 branding will therefore be visible during Capitals games, as well as pre-game and in-game advertisements for the Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics.
On top of that, bet365 will become a presenting sponsor of the MNMT’s Monumental Game Center, a feature that integrates real-time odds and other gamification features into live game streams for the three teams.
“Bringing bet365 to our nation’s capital expands our reach in the US and establishes our presence in one of the country’s most dynamic sports markets,” commented Trip Stoddard, Head of Development at bet365.
“Our partnership with Monumental Sports & Entertainment gives us an exciting opportunity to introduce bet365 to Capitals, Wizards and Mystics fans and build lasting connections across Washington, D.C,” he furthered.
According to bet365, its entry into Washington, D.C., aligns with its broader North American expansion strategy, which saw it also launch in West Virginia towards the end of August. Prior to that, the operator also announced its entry into Alberta’s regulated market, which went live on 13 July.
North America is one of the largest regulated markets in the world, with research from market analysts Grand View Research estimating that the value of the online regulated market will reach US$32.95 billion by 2030.

The Backstory
Washington’s market shifted from lottery control to team-led access
Bet365’s Washington, D.C., launch reflects how quickly the capital’s sports betting market has moved from a constrained local model to a more competitive arena built around major sports brands, media rights and team partnerships. The company’s agreement with Monumental Sports & Entertainment gives it direct exposure to fans of the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards and Washington Mystics, while also placing the operator inside a market where sports betting access increasingly runs through franchise owners and local broadcast platforms.
The district has become a useful test case for the next phase of U.S. sports wagering: not just the legal availability of mobile betting, but the integration of sportsbooks into the live sports experience. Monumental, which owns teams, venues and a regional media network, has spent the past year turning those assets into betting distribution channels. That strategy has drawn multiple operators to the same sports ecosystem, intensifying competition for bettors in a relatively small but politically prominent jurisdiction.
Monumental built the rails before adding more operators
Before bet365’s arrival, Monumental Sports Network had already begun reshaping how fans encounter odds during live games. Its Monumental+ streaming app added real-time betting odds and gamification for Capitals and Wizards broadcasts through a partnership with Play Anywhere and BetMGM, a move described as the first interactive viewing experience of its kind for a local media rights holder outside Las Vegas and the first across the NBA.
That earlier rollout made the network more than a broadcaster. It became a platform where viewers could opt in to wagering-adjacent features, including in-game betting prompts, live odds, trivia, polls and player statistics. Betting itself required users to leave the Monumental+ app and move to the BetMGM platform, with age verification handled by BetMGM. The design preserved separation between viewing and wagering while still introducing odds into the broadcast environment.
The launch of those features through the Monumental+ wagering partnership with Play Anywhere and BetMGM helped establish the commercial logic for later deals. If a regional sports network can turn games into interactive betting environments, sportsbook partners gain a new route to customers beyond traditional advertising and bonus offers. For Monumental, the model creates a way to monetize fans across live games, streaming subscriptions and second-screen engagement.
ESPN Bet’s deal signaled a broader access race
Penn Entertainment moved into the same framework when it reached a long-term agreement with Monumental to secure online market access for ESPN Bet in Washington. The deal placed ESPN Bet alongside the Capitals, Wizards and Mystics and tied the sportsbook to Monumental’s broader media and fan engagement strategy. That agreement underscored the value of Monumental’s position as both a team owner and media operator in a jurisdiction where brand association can be as important as market size.
The Penn Entertainment partnership with Monumental Sports & Entertainment also pointed to a convergence between national sports media and local team networks. ESPN Bet’s pitch has depended on linking betting activity to ESPN accounts and media touchpoints, while Monumental offers a local fan base and broadcast inventory. Together, those pieces created a template for sportsbooks seeking to embed themselves in the daily habits of fans rather than compete only at the app-store level.
That strategy became operational when ESPN Bet went live in Washington, D.C., making the district its 20th U.S. jurisdiction since the brand’s November 2023 launch. The rollout also came with responsible gambling messaging from ESPN, including promotion of its Smart Play resource and the 1-800-Gambler helpline. For operators entering a market tied so visibly to media brands and live sports, responsible gambling controls are not a peripheral issue. They are part of the political and reputational calculation.
In-play betting is changing what market access is worth
The reason these partnerships carry rising value is that U.S. sports betting is shifting toward in-play markets, micro markets and personalized betting prompts. Operators and suppliers increasingly see live games as the main battlefield for customer retention. Static pregame odds are easier to commoditize; in-game wagering requires low-latency data, fast user interfaces, broadcast integration and constant engagement.
Genius Sports has framed that shift through BetVision, its interactive streaming and in-play betting product. In discussing its latest version before Super Bowl LIX, Genius said the product was designed to make betting immediate, intelligent and immersive. The company has argued that integrated bet slips and real-time overlays can materially lift in-play conversion, especially for fast-moving player props and micro markets.
The comparison matters because Monumental’s own interactive broadcast work sits within the same industry trend. The latest BetVision release from Genius Sports highlighted how suppliers, sportsbooks and rights holders are racing to reduce friction between watching and wagering. In that context, bet365’s D.C. launch is not just another state-by-state expansion step. It places the operator inside a media environment already designed to make odds and live engagement part of the viewing experience.
Regulation remains fragmented and politically sensitive
The broader U.S. environment remains uneven. Sports betting rules still vary by jurisdiction, and adjacent products such as prediction markets have drawn fresh regulatory scrutiny. That fragmentation can create opportunities for licensed sportsbooks, but it also increases compliance complexity for companies operating across state lines.
Washington state, separate from Washington, D.C., has become one front in that regulatory debate. Kalshi recently accused gambling regulators there of selective enforcement, arguing that the state was targeting its federally regulated prediction market while not acting similarly against other platforms. State officials have disputed the claim, and a court order required Kalshi to halt most event contracts in Washington, including sports, politics, elections, entertainment, culture and science.
The Kalshi dispute with Washington gambling regulators is not directly about D.C. sportsbook licensing, but it illustrates the larger stakes. Regulators are drawing boundaries around which event-based products qualify as gambling, who may offer them and under what oversight. For traditional sportsbooks such as bet365, the continued regulation of sports wagering at the jurisdiction level offers a clearer, if costly, path to market than the contested federal-state framework surrounding prediction markets.
Bet365 enters a more crowded but more developed capital
Bet365’s arrival in Washington, D.C., therefore comes at a moment when the market is both more attractive and more competitive. Monumental has already demonstrated that it can connect sportsbooks to team brands, local broadcasts and interactive features. ESPN Bet and BetMGM have established related footholds. Fans are becoming accustomed to seeing odds and game predictions integrated into digital viewing experiences, while operators compete to translate that attention into funded accounts and repeat wagering.
For bet365, the stakes are tied to its broader North American expansion. Washington, D.C., does not offer the population scale of larger states, but it offers visibility, affluent sports audiences and a dense calendar of NHL, NBA and WNBA inventory. The market also gives the company a platform to test how its deep betting menu and live wagering product perform when paired with team-based media activations.
The competitive question is whether bet365 can differentiate itself in a jurisdiction where access to fans is increasingly mediated by Monumental’s sports and media properties. Its international brand, extensive markets and live betting depth give it advantages, but rivals already have relationships in the same ecosystem. The launch marks another step in the normalization of sportsbook-team-media integration in the U.S., where the next phase of growth may depend less on simply entering new states and more on controlling the moments when fans are most engaged.
