Indian former MP and actor accused of endorsing illegal betting app

An Indian former MP and actor, Mimi Chakraborty, appeared before the country’s Enforcement Directorate on Monday, due to alleged links to gambling operator 1xBet.
Chakraborty was questioned under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in relation to illegal dealings with the operator including financial transactions and endorsement. The Enforcement Directorate seeks to understand the specifics of her links to the operator.
In addition to its investigation into Chakraborty, the Enforcement Directorate is also investigating other betting apps operating illegally in the country, which have reportedly evaded taxes or deceived users and investors out of money.
Chakraborty is not the only notable personality appearing before the Enforcement Directorate. Actor and 1xBet ambassador Urvashi Rautela will appear on Tuesday for a deposition. At the same time, former cricketers Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan have also been questioned as part of a federal investigation.
Recent legislation introduced by India’s government banned a large number of igaming platforms in the country, after a discovery revealed that around 450 million people lost US$2.3 billion to gambling companies every year.
