SPGA launches group to oppose California sweepstakes bill

Advocacy group, the Social and Promotional Games Association, has gathered several organizations to oppose the sweepstakes ban put forward by Assembly Bill 831 in California.
They are calling for lawmakers to clarify the bill further to avoid harming existing marketing practices.
Many of the groups listed in opposition have direct ties to the sweepstakes and social casino industry, such as social gaming advocacy group the Social Gaming Leadership Alliance and sweepstakes operator Virtual Gaming Worlds.
The Social and Promotional Games Association has declared opposition to Assembly Bill 831 in the past.
However, there is also the American Civil Liberties Union California Action, a civil rights organization and advocate for US payment processors; the American Transaction Processors Coalition, a marketing industry representative group; and the Association of National Advertisers, which includes companies like Google and NBCUniversal.
Another group opposing the bill is Californians United for a Responsible Budget, a group of 80 organizations advocating for reducing the number of people incarcerated in California and the number of prisons overall.
A Social and Promotional Games Association spokesperson said, “The SPGA is proud to stand alongside the ACLU, the Association of National Advertisers, and other partners in voicing concerns about AB 831.
“This diverse coalition, including civil liberties advocates, leading businesses, and industry groups, reflects a shared belief that the bill, as written, could have unintended consequences for lawful promotional practices without offering clear consumer protections.”
