The MLB’s Cleveland Guardians have placed All-Star pitcher Emmanuel Clase on leave due to an ongoing gambling investigation by MLB.

In a statement, the team said it could not comment on the nature of Clase’s leave while an investigation is ongoing, but confirmed his leave would continue until 31 August.

The team also confirmed that no other players or franchise staff members are expected to be involved in the investigation.

An MLB statement said, “Per an agreement with the MLBPA, Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through games August 31st while MLB continues its sports betting investigation. We will not comment further until the investigation has been completed.”

Clase is the second player placed on non-disciplinary leave due to a gambling investigation in the last month. Pitcher Luis Ortiz, also of the Cleveland Guardians, was placed on indefinite leave on July 3 and has not since pitched this season. Reports suggest this was also due to a gambling probe.

The MLB is not the only major league sport that has faced gambling allegations. Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is currently under investigation concerning NBA gambling activity. The federal investigation involves a series of unusual bets placed on Beadsley’s statistics in January 2024, which significantly changed his odds.
