Trading platform Robinhood has filed a lawsuit against the Massachusetts Gaming Commission over the potential enforcement of state gambling laws.

Last week, a lawsuit was filed against prediction platform Kalshi, alleging that it offers unlicensed sports betting in the state. Robinhood was named as it provides users access to Kalshi’s sports events contracts.

Robinhood is attempting to block gambling laws from impeding the sports prediction markets that the app offers its customers. It argues that because all trades occur on the prediction market platform Kalshi, these gambling laws should not apply.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell followed up on Wednesday with a lawsuit, which said, “This lawsuit will ensure that if Kalshi wants to be in the sports gaming business in Massachusetts, they must obtain a license and follow our laws. I am grateful for the ongoing partnership with the Gaming Commission.”

The Massachusetts case with Robinhood and Kalshi is just another in what seems to be a nationwide legal battle between these prediction market platforms and state gambling laws.

Massachusetts isn’t the only state to issue cease-and-desists against Kalshi. The prediction platform has faced similar challenges in Maryland, Arizona, Illinois, Montana, and Ohio. In contrast, the platform is currently able to operate in Nevada and New Jersey.
