Philly’s Super Bowl win costs Pennsylvania sportsbooks US$6.5 million

Winning Super Bowl LIX was great news for Philadelphia Eagles fans, and bettors in general, in Pennsylvania.
Patrons wagered more than US$101.5 million on the game, won by Philadelphia over the Kansas Chiefs, 40-22, a 20.4% increase over the previous high in 2023 when the Eagles also played Kansas City.
But according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, Philadelphia’s win was a loss for sportsbooks. On Thursday, the regulator revealed that wagers on the Eagles resulted in negative revenue of US$6.5 million for sports wagering operators.
According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, a high percentage of wagers were placed on the Eagles to win.
Patrons had the option of placing Super Bowl wagers in Pennsylvania at 18 retail locations and through 11 online wagering sites. Figures show that 91.2% of the money wagered was through online sites.
The last time Pennsylvania sportsbooks lost money on the Super Bowl was in 2020, when the game between Kansas City and San Francisco resulted in a revenue loss of more than US$3.3 million.
