PAGCOR stops primetime TV gambling advertising

Gambling advertisements will now be banned during primetime television in the Philippines, according to the country’s gambling regulator PAGCOR.
After discussions with the Ad Standards Council of the Philippines, PAGCOR Chairman and Chief Executive Alejandro H. Tengco confirmed that gambling advertisements would be banned between 5:30pm and 8:00pm.
Speaking to Filipino TV channel DZMM Teleradyo, Tengco said, “At these times families are together after office work, having dinner and sharing stories.”
PAGCOR and the Ad Standards Council of the Philippines are expected to sign an agreement on July 16 to confirm the rules.
Despite the new restrictions, Tengco has said the state’s goal remains to apply tighter restrictions but not instigate a total ban on gambling advertisement.
“We respect the stand of our lawmakers. That’s their right and duty. On the part of PAGCOR, we are not for a total online gaming ban, but we are for strict regulation,” Tengco said.
The move follows a wider range of restrictions on gambling advertisement, as previously, it had been banned from billboards, trains, buses, jeepneys, and taxicabs.
With the announcement of these bans, the idea of a primetime gambling advertising ban was rumored but not confirmed until Tengco’s most recent statement.
