Consumer protection law firms in California launch lawsuit against DFS operators

A group of California consumer protection law practices has filed class action lawsuits against daily fantasy sports operators FanDuel, DraftKings, PrizePicks, and Underdog.
The suits claim that these operators have been offering illegal sports betting in California under the guise of daily fantasy sports.
Almeida Law Group has filed the suits on behalf of California residents who played daily fantasy sports games in the state. The lawsuits demand monetary and injunctive relief and claim these companies breached the California Penal Code.
While the Almeida Law Group has filed four lawsuits, it continues to investigate other operators, such as Thrillzz, Parlay Play, Sleeper, Boom Fantasy, Yahoo Daily Fantasy, Dabble, and Betr.
Margot Cutter, partner at Cutter Law, said, “These lawsuits are about fairness and truth in advertising. Californians deserve to know when they’re engaging in gambling – and when companies call it something else to skirt the law, that’s a problem not just for consumers but for the integrity of our legal system.”
Shortly after the lawsuit was announced, Attorney General Rob Bonta announced his official opinion on daily fantasy sports in the state, declaring these activities illegal.
Bonta’s opinion has been discussed in the days leading up to its release, with the potential announcement inspiring action like Underdog’s failed attempt to sue the attorney general to prevent him from issuing the opinion.
