Indonesia announces stronger online gambling rules

The government of Indonesia has revealed that it will bring in stronger rules to target online gambling, with a focus on prevention.
The news was announced on Thursday at a press conference in Jakarta by officials from the country’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.
The Director for Certification and Electronic Transaction Supervision, Teguh Arifiyadi, said that the new upcoming regulations would set out the responsibilities of various stakeholders, including police agencies, internet service providers, and fintech firms.
He also underlined that there would be stronger sanctions for individuals or companies who breached the rules.
At the press conference, officials emphasized that internet service providers were expected to be key to limiting access to gambling. They will be required to set up stronger monitoring systems to ensure that no one is gambling online, with a particular emphasis on preventing minors from gambling.
According to Arifiyadi, there are currently thousands of young people gambling online in the country.
Officials stated that parental supervision would be critical as it worked towards ensuring higher child protection standards online.
Rieke Diah Pitaloka, a member of Commission VI, the committee that oversees the work of private companies, has also argued that there should be stiffer penalties for community leaders or government officials found to be involved in gambling.
