DraftKings agrees to refund US$3 million to Connecticut consumers

DraftKings has reached an agreement with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection to refund around 7,000 state residents a combined total of US$3 million.
The agreement follows an investigation into the company’s marketing practices. The investigation concluded that between October 2021 and January 2023, DraftKings offered promotions without fully disclosing the associated terms and conditions. Many customers who claimed the offers stated that they were unaware of the conditions.
As well as the US$3 million in consumer refunds, DraftKings has agreed to spend US$50,000 to support consumer protection and to bring in compliance measures like mandatory annual training for all Connecticut-based marketing and advertising staff, better promotion of educational resources, and providing more clarity on bonus terms.
The Director of the Department of Consumer Protection’s Gaming Division, Kris Gilman, said “Gaming operators must clearly communicate the terms of any promotion to their customers, including requirements to wager a certain amount or other conditions to obtain a promised award.
“We are happy that DraftKings has agreed to assess its promotions, provide additional training to its employees regarding Connecticut’s laws and regulations, and return funds to consumers who misunderstood and in many cases were completely unaware of the terms of the promotions they participated in.”
The agreement comes days after DraftKings launched a new responsible gambling tool, My Budget Builder, letting players enforce strict limits on spending and deposits.
