British Columbia Lottery Corporation warns residents over online casino scams

British Columbia Lottery Corporation has warned residents in the province to be wary of online casino scams.
The Canadian crown corporation, which manages all legal gambling products in British Columbia, said scam websites had impersonated legitimate casinos, using licensed imagery to trick players. These scam sites claim to offer exclusive promotions that can’t be found on the original websites.
PlayNow.com is the only regulated online casino in British Columbia. Players can register with it and its adjacent sites, BCLC Lotto!, PlayNow Poker BC, and PlayNow BC Sportsbook. A verified checkmark allows users to distinguish legitimate sites from fake ones.
The British Columbia Lottery Corporation also released a detailed list of ways residents can protect themselves from scam websites, including never giving their social security number when prompted and carefully checking the website’s domain to see if it is legitimate.
The regulator reminded customers that there are no fees or taxes on prizes associated with legitimate igaming in British Columbia.
This warning follows a similar one by Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan, which warned residents about fake online casino ads impersonating land-based casinos.
Residents in Saskatchewan also play through British Columbia Lottery Corporation-operated sites like PlayNow.
