Canadian gaming regulator Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan has warned residents about online casino ads, which could be scams designed to steal user banking information.

According to the gaming regulator’s warning, fake ads for scam sites are becoming increasingly common on social media platforms.

Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan highlighted promotions that direct users to online versions of land-based Saskatchewan casinos, such as the Dakota Dunes Casino and Casino Regina, which are scams.

Vice President of Gaming at Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan, Steve Tunison, said, “None of the land-based casinos in Saskatchewan have a legitimate online version, and people who see these types of ads on their social media channels are strongly advised not to click on them. Saskatchewan people who wish to gamble online can do so safely and securely on PlayNow.com, which is the only legal online gaming platform in our province.”

Although the advertisements might use the same images, logos, and branding from legitimate land-based casino websites in Saskatchewan, the regulator stressed that they’re not to be trusted and that users should report them to the platform they appeared on to ensure they’re removed.

So far, the only licensed online casino platform in Saskatchewan is PlayNow, which is run through the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority.

However, the platform is owned and developed by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation and operates in other provinces, such as British Columbia and Manitoba.

This is not the first time Saskatchewan has faced issues with online gambling safety. In July 2024, hackers targeted PlayNow, and the site recommended that users change passwords following the attack. Any account that was targeted was locked until passwords were changed.
