Brazilian gaming and advertising regulators unite to strengthen oversight of betting advertisements

Brazil’s Secretariat of Prizes and Betting has joined with the country’s National Council for Advertising Self-Regulation (Conar) to strengthen oversight and promote responsible advertising in Brazil’s fixed-odds betting sector.
The agreement forms a line of communication between the two bodies to spot and address illegal advertising. It also includes new educational campaigns and information material.
Conar President Sergio Pompilio said, “This is a significant milestone. The combination of efforts between regulation and self-regulation has been consolidated as a modern and requested approach in most countries, being essential to face the challenges ahead, especially in impact segments, such as betting.”
By sharing information, the agencies say they aim to detect repeat offenders and enhance the efficiency of inspections.
They also hope to establish faster identification of advertisements that violate regulations while promoting responsible gambling, with special attention to protecting children and adolescents from misleading or harmful advertising.
Secretary of Prizes and Betting Regis Dudena added, “We know that advertising plays a central role in how society views and accesses betting and commercial promotions. Therefore, we cannot allow messages from illegal agents, or those that mislead or encourage harmful practices, much less those that reach vulnerable groups, such as children and adolescents.”
Brazil isn’t the only country attempting to curb illegal online gambling advertisements, as a Philippine senator has urged regulators and broadcasters to enhance monitoring of advertisers and crack down on those that are unlawful.
