Argentinian lawmaker launches petition to support underage gambling prevention measure

Argentinian lawmaker Diego Garciarena has called for support from the public for legislation to regulate online betting platforms and prevent the rise of gambling addiction in minors.
Representing the Radical Civic Union, Garciarena has launched an online petition through his X (formerly Twitter) account where Argentinian citizens can declare their support for the measure.
“Online gambling continues to grow unchecked, while the provincial government continues to look the other way. Our bill seeks to prevent childhood gambling addiction,” he said on the social media platform at the end of last month.
The bill aims to force online gambling platforms to enforce biometric identity checks to ensure that minors can’t sign up, while also restricting gambling advertising across social media and traditional media verticals.
Garciarena’s measure was introduced in January and was combined with 12 measures in the Committee for the Prevention of Addictions. All those bills focused on the same concept of reducing gambling addiction among minors. The legislation still needs approval from two committees before it reaches the Chamber of Deputies.
The Chamber of Deputies passed an earlier version of Garciarena’s bills in November 2024. However, that bill and the more recent version submitted by Garciarena and others have stalled in committees and the Senate since.
According to the Ombudsman’s Office of the Office of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, in October 2024, one in four students aged between 12 and 19 were flound to have gambled online at least once.
