Wyoming lawmakers have drafted a bill that, if passed, will increase the state tax on online sports wagering from 10% to 20%.

During a meeting of the legislature’s select committee on 12 June, lawmakers discovered that the current 10% tax charge is significantly lower than that of neighboring states.

Revenue generated from online sports betting has totaled US$629.7 million in the last five years, with the state receiving only US$3.8 million from taxes.

Karen Vaughn, Associate Fiscal Analyst at the Legislative Service Office explained that the average online sports wagering tax in other states is 19%. “I can tell you that none of the surrounding states are lower than 10%, or 10% or less,” she said.

In response to the lower tax rate, Rep. Liz Storer has begun the move to draft a bill that would introduce the sports wagering tax hike, while Chairwoman Sen. Tara Nethercott noted that the 20% tax rate is a placeholder that can change once the fiscal impact is better understood.

In recent news, Louisiana officials have introduced their own online sports betting tax hike, with the betting tax rising from 15% to 21.5%. House Bill 639, sponsored by Rep. Neil Riser, cleared the Senate with a 35-3 vote.
