West Virginia launches gambling addiction app

The Problem Gambling Help Network of West Virginia has launched a new app that will support people dealing with gambling addiction.
The app, developed in conjunction with health technology provider Chess Health, is a customized version of Connections, which has previously been used to help people struggling with substance use disorder recovery.
Users can access 24/7 crisis support, attend virtual support meetings, and benefit from daily check-ins, community help, and educational resources. The app will also be integrated with the existing 1-800-GAMBLER hotline and relevant forums for gambling addiction support.
West Virginia currently has a limited range of options for gambling addicts, and the app is one attempt to help fill the gap.
The network’s parent organization, First Choice Services, said that it plans to apply existing addiction support methods to combat gambling addiction.
Sheila Moran, the Director of Communications at First Choice Services, said, “We’ve seen how the Connections app helps people recovering from substance use. Now we’re offering similar support for those affected by gambling.”
Pending a successful launch of the app, First Choice is planning to include linking surveys to enable identification of those who might have co-occurring conditions, such as drug and alcohol abuse.
