Vermont marks one year of legal sports betting with $23.8 million handle

Vermont’s online sportsbooks registered sports betting handle of over US$23.8 million in January 2025, marking the first anniversary of legal sports betting in the state.

January 2025 sports betting handle was up 19.8% on handle in January 2024. However, as sports betting launched on 11 January 2024, there were fewer days in which for sportsbooks were operational.

From January 2025 sports betting handle, sportsbooks took home revenues of US$2.5 million, a 31.9% share of handle. Meanwhile, the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery collected over US$800,000 in taxes from this amount.

Basketball was the most bet on sport in January 2025, attracting US$7.18 million in handle. Football wasn’t far behind, with a US$7.10 million handle. Tennis betting saw handle of US$1.5 million. The other two top five most bet on sports were hockey and soccer, posting betting handles under US$1 million.

US$14 million of the handle came from in-state bettors from over 678,000 wagers. Over 14,000 active users produced this betting total, spending an average of US$20.78 on each bet.

Meanwhile, players from outside Vermont spent an average of US$41.45 on each of the over 235,000 bets placed by over 20,000 active users. These out-of-state players contributed handle of over US$9.7 million.

Three online sportsbooks are available in Vermont: DraftKings, Fanatics, and FanDuel. DraftKings recently revealed it generated revenues of US$1.4 billion in Q4 2024, a 13% increase year-on-year.
