Illinois Gaming Board sides with BetMGM over betting dispute

Illinois resident Mark Aiello has lost his appeal against the Illinois Gaming Board over BetMGM’s decision to void his bets, which would have won him US$389,000.
In March, Aiello placed various bets on a Chicago Bulls game where he correctly predicted the rebound and assist totals of individual players. However, BetMGM voided the bets prior to the game due to errors of incorrect or inflated odds.
“What probably happened is they had a glitch,” gaming consultant and attorney Elihu Feustel explained to CBS News Chicago. Feustel is known for authoring books on how to win at gambling but understands why the bets were voided.
“Let’s say I send a US$200 deposit to my bank, and they credit me with US$20,000 because of a typo. That’s a human error, and under gaming law and under contract law, when there’s an obvious mistake, the transaction is voidable,” he added.
Despite the operator’s mistake, Aiello said he is disappointed by the ruling and still feels he is owed something. If the bets were placed at the correct odds, he would have stood to win up to US$40,000.
BetMGM has yet to say if it will pay out the bet at the correct odds.
In recent news, DraftKings has also been challenged for refusing to pay US$14 million after an Iowa man’s bets were voided.
