QuestBet fined AU$80,000 for failure to protect players

Australian online bookmaker QuestBet has been hit with an AU$80,000 (US$52,200)1 AUD = 0.6529 USD
2025-08-12Powered by CMG CurrenShift fine after the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission found that it had failed to act on clear signs a customer was experiencing gambling-related distress.
Commission Chief Executive Suzy Neilan said the case raised concerns around the company culture and the lack of adequate systems to protect at-risk players.
Neilan said in a statement, “Our investigation of QuestBet’s practices found the bookmaker failed to have in place adequate systems to protect individuals identifiably at risk of gambling harm.”
The investigation began after a customer complained that QuestBet allowed them to continue betting and losing heavily over several weeks in 2023.
Between April and June, the customer contacted the bookmaker more than 20 times, requesting extra credits and bonus bets. On six occasions, they mentioned suffering significant losses.
Rather than intervening, QuestBet provided bonus bets on five of those occasions. The customer lost around AU$15,000 (US$9,790)1 AUD = 0.6529 USD

The regulator said staff should have suggested harm-reduction tools such as betting limits, time tracking, self-exclusion, or support services. No such assistance was offered.
Despite receiving multiple deadline extensions, QuestBet also reportedly failed to respond to the regulator’s formal request for an explanation. Neilan said the fine sent a clear message to all operators.
The fine follows another sanction imposed on sportsbook operator Betfair in July. The Australian Communications and Media Authority fined the operator AU$871,000 (US$569,000)1 AUD = 0.6529 USD
