Philippines President Marcos shows concern over igaming destroying families

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has warned that igaming is causing serious harm to Filipino families, particularly through digital platforms, when accessed irresponsibly.
The president said in his latest vlog posted on social media, “many families are being destroyed by it (igaming), especially if it is used irresponsibly.”
While praising digitalization’s role in improving government services and boosting sectors like healthcare and education, the president also highlighted its misuse for scams, misinformation, and gambling.
Lucas Bersamin, Executive Secretary of the President, confirmed in an interview with Philstar Global that the administration is reviewing the broader effect of igaming. “The policy remains the same … the president is very strong about POGOs (Philippine offshore gaming operators). POGOs are already banned.”
Yet, the government is evaluating whether non-scam-related igaming should be allowed under stricter guidelines.
Several senators, including Sherwin Gatchalian and Risa Hontiveros, are backing a full ban. Gatchalian is drafting legislation to penalize illegal operators, influencers, and digital platforms promoting such games.
Vice President Sara Duterte backed Marcos’ concerns, telling Philstar that she opposes all forms of igaming because of risks for youth and families. “It could destroy families and the future of young people,” she said.
Meanwhile, licensed operators such as Solaire Resort and Okada Manila highlighted that their platforms are regulated and contribute significantly to tourism, with 2% of gross gaming revenue directed toward charitable projects.
The Department of Finance also has proposed imposing higher taxes and stricter regulations.
