Slots developer Play’n Go has pledged that it will not provide games to sweepstakes casinos, reaffirming its commitment to operating in regulated markets.

The announcement comes as sweepstakes casinos are being heavily scrutinized by regulators worldwide, particularly in the US.

Speaking about the sweepstakes model, Play’n Go Chief Executive Johan Tornqvist emphasized that these operators worked in a grey area, saying, “Sweepstakes casinos do not operate inside a regulated framework and that’s not something we support. Our commitment to regulated markets is absolute. We will never supply our games to sweepstakes casinos.”

Sweepstakes casinos offer dual virtual currencies for users to play casino-like games, including slots, table games, and poker.

A recent lawsuit in Alabama compared sweepstakes currencies to casino chips, which can sometimes be exchanged for cash or prizes. In addition to the suit in Alabama, sweepstakes operators face legal action in other states, like New York and Illinois.

Shawn Fluharty, Head of Government Affairs for Play’n Go, added, “Sweepstakes casinos threaten the regulated market model that many of us in the industry have worked so hard to achieve, which protects players first and foremost, and delivers much-needed revenue to jurisdictions.”

Play’n Go has a history of advocating for more regulation in the online gaming sector. It was the first game developer to rule out making ‘Bonus Buy’ games, which have since been banned in the UK and the Netherlands.
