Philippine officials ban online gambling for government workers

Philippine government employees have been prohibited from engaging in any form of online gambling, according to a memorandum issued by the country’s Department of the Interior and Local Government.
The new government order extends the existing casino gambling ban to cover online platforms, citing the 1987 Constitution, the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials, and existing presidential directives.
The circular stated, “Public office is a public trust. Engaging in online gambling undermines the credibility of our institutions and diverts public servants from their sworn duty to serve with integrity, competence, and loyalty.”
The Department of the Interior and Local Government also noted that online gambling poses an equal, if not greater, threat to the integrity of public service than traditional gambling.
The order is already in effect, and under relevant laws, rules, and regulations, violators will face administrative and/or criminal sanctions.
The move has come as online gambling has faced increasing scrutiny from various Philippine organizations, including lawmakers and clergy, as concerns rise over the vulnerability of young people and the threat of gambling addiction.
In response, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has said that he will create a national conference to monitor online gambling in the country.
