New Zealand opens register of interest for prospective online operators

New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs has urged gambling operators to register their interest in becoming licensed when new online gambling regulations are introduced.
The government has already announced that it will introduce a new regulatory framework for the industry and issue licenses under a competitive process. Operators who wish to obtain a license will be expected to meet various regulatory requirements.
Speaking about the new regulations, Trina Lowry, the Director of the Online Gambling Implementation Programme, said that operators must register at an early stage.
“As we continue to design and implement the system, we want to ensure it is clear, efficient and supportive for potential operators. To help us achieve this, we want to engage with operators to understand what information would be most helpful as the process unfolds and understand their experience and needs,” she said.
While online casino gambling is not currently legal in New Zealand, offshore operators offer gaming platforms that are accessible to New Zealanders. According to Lowry, regulating the sector will help protect customers and reduce gambling harm.
The new casino licensing system is expected to launch in 2026, and new legislation will make it legal for operators with licenses to advertise to New Zealanders, which is currently prohibited.
New Zealand tribal leaders oppose the liberalized gambling market, and urged the government in April to halt the auction of online casino licenses.
