A bill to ban player-specific prop bets on college sports has passed New Jersey’s Senate State Government, wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee.

SB 3080 from Senators Kristin M. Corrado and Joseph P. Cryan passed through the committee with five approval votes against no opposition or abstentions. The bill also received a second reading in the Senate, but no vote.

The New Jersey legislature operates until the end of June, during which time SB 3080 must receive approval from the Senate, House, and Governor before becoming law.

Senator Corrado said, “Proposition bets have led to a rise in the harassment of student-athletes and have threatened the integrity of college sports. This legislation will ban player-specific prop betting in New Jersey, which will help curb that appalling behavior.

For years, college player prop betting and its safety have been discussed among lawmakers and sports organizations. NCAA President Charlie Baker has publicly encouraged bans on college player props since March 2024, citing integrity concerns and harassment as key reasons for supporting a ban.

Since then, the organization has been conscious of building protections for college athletes. When the NCAA agreed to a sports data sharing deal with Genius Sports in May, it included a measure that Genius Sports can’t provide odds on negative college player prop betting.
