Mississippi House passes online sports betting bill

The Mississippi State House approved legislation to legalize mobile sports betting yesterday (February 3).
This marks the second time a mobile betting bill has passed through the House after lawmakers disagreed on a final proposal in 2024.
Although sports betting and casino gambling have been legal in Mississippi for some time, online betting is still restricted.
Opponents of mobile sports betting claim it could affect revenue from the state’s casinos. However, House Gaming Chairman Rep. Casey Eure disagrees.
He said at a House meeting on Monday, “As I told you all last year, I’m committed to, and this bill is committed to our bricks-and-mortar casinos. All mobile sports betting will still be tethered to bricks-and-mortar casinos in the state of Mississippi.”
The new version of the Mississippi Mobile Sports Wagering Act passed with an 88-10 vote, but it now needs to pass through the Senate before being signed into law.
Proponents of the bill hope it will undercut illicit offshore betting platforms, while the 12% tax will help fund the state’s Emergency Road and Bridge Repair Fund.
