The Mississippi Gaming Commission has issued cease-and-desist letters to various online gambling operators that are illegally offering sports betting and casino-style games within the state.

These operators were found to violate state and federal laws, including the Mississippi Criminal Gambling Laws, the Mississippi Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, the Mississippi Gaming Control Act, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, and the Federal Wire Act.

Mississippi Gaming Commission Executive Director Jay McDaniel stated, “Our laws are clear that casino-style gaming and sports wagering are not allowed online in Mississippi, outside of a licensed casino. The MGC will aggressively pursue both domestic and offshore illegal operators, and the MGC is currently providing criminal case files to our state and federal law enforcement partners and requesting prosecution.

“Companies like those put on notice today mislead our residents by claiming to be legal outlets, when in fact they operate illegally and without providing any tax revenue or other tangible benefit to Mississippi.”

The Mississippi Gaming Commission further warns residents against using any online gambling site, including sweepstakes casinos, as players may be subject to criminal prosecution and financial loss. The statement also urges Mississippians to check the regulator’s website to see which gambling platforms are illegal in the state.

Mississippi isn’t the only state to recently crack down on illegal gambling. In June, the New York Attorney General, Letitia James, issued 26 desist letters to sweepstakes casinos.
