The Louisiana Gaming Control Board has issued a key action to address the rising threat of unlawful offshore wagering and sweepstakes platforms targeting the state.

In collaboration with the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office and the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division, the gaming regulator has issued over 40 cease-and-desist letters to offshore operators who are not following state gaming laws.

A formal cease-and-desist order against online casino operator Harp Media, also known as Bovada, is part of the crackdown and requires the corporation to stop offering illegal gambling services in Louisiana. Louisiana isn’t the only state to clamp down on Bovada; in February, the Florida Gaming Control Commission also noted that it had issued a cease-and-desist order to the operator.

These enforcement actions are in accordance with the Louisiana Gaming Control Board’s statutory duty under the Louisiana Gaming Control Law (La. R.S. 27:1 et seq.), which empowers it to regulate gaming activities, ensure licensee suitability, and eliminate criminal influence.

Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Christopher B. Hebert said, “These actions send a clear message. Louisiana will not tolerate illegal operators who put our citizens at risk and undermine the fairness and integrity of our gaming industry. We will continue to use every enforcement tool available to protect the public and uphold the law.”
