Japanese TV station employee arrested for spending JPY100 million on illegal overseas gambling

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has arrested an employee at Japanese TV station Fuji TV for illegal online gambling.

Yoshitaka Suzuki was the manager of Fuji TV’s variety show and was arrested for gambling via his phone on the overseas online casino Eldoah Casino from 22 September, 2024, to 13 May, 2025.

Eldoah Casino holds a gambling license in Comoros and is operated by Global System Technologies Inc. Suzuki reportedly spent JPY100 million (US$685,000)1 JPY = 0.0069 USD

The man from Tokyo’s Shinagawa Ward lied during a Fuji TV internal investigation into online gambling while playing games like baccarat.

Suzuki admitted to the charge and said he had learned about online gambling five years prior, while also confirming he didn’t think the gambling issue would be discovered.

Fuji TV said in a statement, “We take the case seriously. We will fully cooperate with the investigation and work to prevent a recurrence of such cases.”

Japan lawmakers have cracked down on illegal gambling in recent months. The Japanese Foreign Ministry has asked countries to take action to prevent online casinos from advertising to Japanese players. Japan’s national parliament recently tightened laws around companies promoting overseas online casinos.
