Indonesian President pushes for firmer online gambling regulations

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has discussed the need for government regulation on online gambling platforms at a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said, “One of the steps that will be taken in the near future is issuing a regulation, likely in the form of a government regulation.”

In a statement to the press following the meeting, Meutya also highlighted measures the government has already taken to combat online gambling, including evaluations from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center that suggest a decline in online gambling transactions across 2024.

Illegal online gambling in Indonesia has taken center stage in 2025 after the Indonesian government over 43,000 online gambling advertisements were blocked between 1 January and 6 January.

Additionally, from October 2024 to January 2025, Indonesian authorities shut down more than 700,000 items related to online gambling on websites, Meta, and other file-sharing platforms.
