Indian lawmakers to create Special Investigation Team to tackle igaming

The Telangana government in India will amend its laws on igaming by creating a Special Investigation Team to try to stop gambling in the state while enforcing stricter sanctions on offenders.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy addressed lawmakers on 26 March, disclosing that the government will take action against the increased threat of online betting and betting apps.
In a response to Bharat Rashtra Samithi member T Harish Rao, who said the government needed to take action as igaming was leading to a rise in suicides among young adults, Reddy said the Special Investigation Team would prevent this.
Recalling a previous law by Telelanga officials in 2017 to ban igambling that ultimately failed, Reddy said online betting had grown significantly since then and could no longer be investigated by just a police station, leading to the need to create a Special Investigation Team.
If implemented, the government would also amend its laws to make the original two-year sentence given to perpetrators more stringent.
Reddy also admitted that social media influencers caught promoting igaming needed to face more than just questioning, which, in just recent weeks, various Bollywood celebrities were found to be promoting offshore operators ahead of the Indian Premier League.
