Illinois igaming still a possibility according to one state lawmaker

Legalized igaming could still be coming to the state of Illinois, according to one lawmaker, despite the apparent lack of legislative progress.
State Rep. Bob Rita believes that legalization could be back on the agenda despite the fast-approaching end of the spring legislative session.
Speaking to local media, Rita said anything was possible, even with just a few days remaining in the session.
“This is the time of year where you start seeing different items that maybe didn’t have legs, potentially could. We need to look at it very closely and see what causes and effects it actually has, not just looking at, well, we could raise money,” he said.
Consistent efforts have been made this year to legalize online gaming in the state. HB3080 and SB1963 are currently stuck in the House and Senate, respectively, but time is running out to pass them in this session, and legalization faces stiff opposition.
That opposition doesn’t just come from anti-gambling organisations but also from the retail casino sector and businesses that rely on the income stream provided by video gaming terminals. The Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association has stated that legalizing online casinos would reduce revenue for local businesses.
The legislative session comes to an end on May 31, giving lawmakers just a few days to make progress on any legalization plan.
