Globe’s GCash launches new responsible gambling features

Philippine telecommunications provider Globe Telecom has updated its mobile wallet brand GCash with new measures to promote responsible online gaming.
The launch comes ahead of an anticipated circular from the Philippine Central Bank, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, that will bring in new limits on access to online gambling.
It also comes at a time when lawmakers have been pushing for a ban on links between gambling sites and digital wallets.
In a recent virtual briefing, Globe Chief Financial Officer Juan Carlo C. Puno said the company was committed to responsible gaming, highlighting controls that stop users under 21 from participating in licensed gaming activities.
Puno revealed that the upcoming GCash app updates, which are consistent with rules set by the country’s gambling regulator PAGCOR, will include active notifications and educational materials to encourage responsible gaming behavior.
These prompts appear when users enter the app’s GLife section or access specific gaming merchants.
Additionally, the user experience will be adjusted to add what he described as ‘friction’ by increasing the number of clicks needed to reach gaming websites from three to five, to limit impulsive gaming.
Among the new features will be a self-exclusion option, allowing users to voluntarily restrict or limit their gaming activity, including creating spending and duration limits.
