FanDuel to repay Jacksonville Jaguars US$5 million after team’s former employee stole US$22 million to gamble

FanDuel is set to repay NFL team the Jacksonville Jaguars US$5 million of the US$22 million stolen by the team’s former employee Amit Patel, which he used to gamble at the sportsbook.
Patel was found guilty of stealing millions of dollars over the course of four years, from 2019 to 2023, when he worked in the Jaguars’ financial department.
He used almost US$20 million of the funds, which he stole using a virtual credit card program, to gamble on sports, alongside playing daily fantasy at FanDuel. It was reported by his attorney that he lost 99% of the money he stole.
While the NFL did not directly intervene in discussions between the Jacksonville Jaguars and FanDuel, it is said to have encouraged the sportsbook to reach a fair resolution with the team.
The gambling operator is a league partner, and an ESPN report said, “FanDuel was motivated to pay the Jaguars in the interest of being a good partner with the league.”
In March 2024, Patel was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for wire fraud and illegal monetary transactions and was ordered to pay the Florida franchise US$21.1 million.
In October 2024, Patel sued FanDuel for US$250 million, claiming the sportsbook “exploited” his gambling addiction.
In other news, FanDuel recently announced a partnership with sports betting network VSiN, to distribute content on the FanDuel Sports Network app, along with nine regional outlets.
