Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has revealed plans to expand its operations in the US to include prediction markets and other services.

Prediction markets allow customers to stake money on a yes or no outcome for something to occur in the future. Crypto-trading and prediction platforms like Coinbase and Kalshi provide various prediction markets, including on sports, politics, and pop culture.

Coinbase’s prediction platform will launch in the US in the next few months and then roll out internationally, depending on approval from different jurisdictions.

The company also intends to provide tokenized equity following the Securities and Exchange Commission’s decision to create rules for crypto-based trading through its Project Crypto.

Vice President of Product at Coinbase, Max Branzburg, said to CNBC, “We’re building an exchange for everything. Everything you want to trade, in a one-stop shop, on-chain. … We’re bringing all assets onchain – stocks, prediction markets, and more. We’re building the foundations for a faster, more accessible, more global economy.”

While Coinbase is looking at expanding into prediction markets, it’s entering a competitive market. Prediction market platform Polymarket recently acquired QCEX for US$112 million to regain entry into the US market.

Meanwhile, sportsbook operator DraftKings is considering buying prediction site Railbird Exchange and launching its prediction platform.
