A Canadian lawmaker is again attempting to pass a national framework of regulation to control sports betting advertisements.

Sen. Marty Deacon has reintroduced Bill S-211, which would establish a national framework governing sports betting advertising.

This is the second time the bill has been introduced, as the resignation of then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cut short the legislative session in which the bill was due to be discussed.

Previously listed as Bill S-269, and registered in 2023, the bill led to multiple hearings last year, and proposes a framework that is expected to include restrictions on the scope, location, and number of sports betting advertisements, as well as limiting the use of celebrities and athletes.

According to representatives of the sports betting industry, who contributed to last year’s debates, the number of ads was already in decline.

One report, by research consultants ThinkTV, said that the number of gambling-related ads had fallen from 442 in 2022 to 189 in 2024.

Significant opposition to the original bill also existed, including from the National Football League and the National Hockey League. At the same time, the Canadian Gaming Association said it was working on a code for gambling operators.
