Americans are expected to wager a record US$30 billion on the 2025 NFL season through legal sportsbooks, according to new estimates from the American Gaming Association.

The figure marks an 8.5% increase over last year’s revised US$27.6 billion handle.

The growth reflects the continuing expansion of regulated sports betting, now available in 38 states and Washington, D.C., after the Supreme Court’s 2018 repeal of the federal ban.

Public support for sports betting also is strong, with three-quarters of Americans backing legalization in their state and 90% viewing it as an acceptable form of entertainment, according to the AGA.

“This season, fans have more ways than ever to responsibly engage with the game they love. Legal sports betting enhances the fun and friendly competition that make NFL games and traditions even more special,” said AGA President and Chief Executive Officer Bill Miller.

Miller also emphasizes the importance of safe gambling through the AGA’s responsible gambling campaign, Have A Game Plan.

“With strong consumer protections and a shared commitment to responsibility, the legal, regulated sports betting industry encourages all football fans to have a game plan before placing a bet and ensure their gameday experience, regardless of the outcome of a bet or the game, remains enjoyable,” he added.

The safer gambling campaign offers advice on responsible wagering, including setting budgets, understanding odds, and using licensed operators.
