ACMA blocks eight illegal gambling websites in Australia

Australian media regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, has blocked eight illegal online gambling websites that have breached Australian laws.
The eight online platforms, JokaRoom, AUDPokies888, Aura Play, Instant Casino, Leon, Rich Papa, UUSpin, and Wild Pokies, appeared to have breached Australia’s 2001 Interactive Gambling Act.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority has since warned residents in Australia to be careful of these sites due to the lack of customer protections.
The regulator stressed that consumers using illegal sites risk losing their money but has relayed that players can check the legitimacy of online gambling platforms through the regulator’s website, including ways in which bettors can protect themselves from illegal gambling operators.
Since 2017, the regulator has banned 1,154 illegal online gambling sites and affiliate sites from operating on Australian servers, with the first blocking request made in November 2019.
The Authority also revealed that a further 220 illegal sites have since pulled out of the Australian market.
Australia isn’t the only country to be cracking down on illegal gambling websites. The Michigan Gaming Control Board announced on 12 February that it had issued nine cease-and-desist letters to unlicensed online casinos.
